Q: What’s the ONE super-hyped book you’ll NEVER read?

The most polarizing question I've seen here yet! I haven't done the hop in a while (thanks to being busy with my new born baby) but this question just pulled me right back in!


I'd have to say the Twilight series is my "never gonna read" point. I haven't the slightest bit of interest in reading them, though I LOVE paranormal/fantasy/space fantasy books (Ilona Andrews, Brandon Sanderson, Patricia Briggs, Bujold, ..tell me when to stop!). You name it, I've probably read it or started the series.
Still, Twilight just rubs me the wrong way. Apologies to the Twihards out there!

“What's the One genre that you wish you could get into, but can't?"
Poetry maybe? There really isn't much I don't read - but super serious "Literature" like Salman Rushdie, The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy) have been hard to get into. I never did finish any of those books.

So Poetry, some Literature, that sort of thing.

New to E-Volving Books? I'm on the cusp of 300 followers, and I will follow back! Be my 300th :)
I love to read, review, write about news in Speculative Fiction - YA or epic fantasy, typically. I have a Kindle, though I still read paper books for variety!
I'm currently looking for a blogger who wants to do a post exchange (your choice of topic)

“When did you realize reading was your passion and a truly important part of your life?”
I'll answer this in two parts:

I discovered my love for reading when my mother realized she had a hyperactive child, and made me sit down and read, hoping to keep me occupied for a while. That did it - my summer was just trips to and from the library :) I couldn't understand half the words, but she just told me carry on trying!
A truly important part of my life? It always has been, I can't remember a time when I didn't read. It was like eating and breathing, to me. My small town library had a 2 books checked out at a time policy, so I used to borrow 2 books a day, every day! Some holidays, I'd practically live in the library, until closing time - reading while there, and then take my two books to read at night.
What's your childhood memory of reading?

Fictional world? The world of Discworld, of course! I'd pick Ankh Morpork for the city :)
*update* I realized from comments below that some haven't read Terry Pratchett's fascinating Discworld books yet. So: Ankh Morpork is a city-State, with an Unseen University, a brave, multi-specied City Watch and fantastic, nosy residents.

"Summer is coming - What 2011 release are you looking forward to?"

Wow, this feels rather unfamiliar - I haven't had the time to do justice with the Hop in over a month!

The release that I'm looking forward to is Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews, Book 5 in the Kate Daniels series. I'm a fan of hers, as regular e-Volving Books visitors know:

Book Blogger Hop #20: Many Monies for books?

It's time for another Book Blogger Hop, courtesy of Crazy for Books!

 

"If I gave you £50 (or $80) and sent you into a bookshop right now, what would be in your basket when you finally staggered to the till?"

Wow, *does some quick math*, that would be Rs. 4000, which is a LOT of books! (or in my case a few hardcover novels).

I'd pick up The Crippled God by Steven Erikson, another copy of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for a friend. My recent read of The Wise Man's Fear (my review is here) would go into this basket too, for a gift or re-read (already I don't think I could carry this presumably infinitely-sized basket!).

What else? I should still have enough for one.more.book. right?

I'd get some Manga - Its been ages since I've read any. Maybe some Patricia Briggs, if there is anything new that I haven't read yet...

This is dangerous (read expensive) territory now and I can't resist the bookstores this weekend!!

The Book I'd like to see made into a movie?

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series! Though I'd combine several books into movies, as so much of the books is purely descriptive, world-building material.
Another book I'm excited is already making it to the wide-screen thanks to HBO is George R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice. The HBO Mini series is called Game of Thrones after the first novel, and will be out mid-April - how exciting!

The Book I'm looking forward to in '11?
In general, the big year for next books in series' that I follow from prominent authors is 2012.
Robert Jordan and Brandon's finale to the Wheel of Time will come out then, and Stormlight Archives #2 by Brandon is due to release late 2012.
That said, I'm looking forward to the next Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels starrer releasing in May!

"Why do I read my genre- Fantasy and Science Fiction?"

I know exactly why I love Fantasy - especially high fantasy: epic, world-creating, awe-inspiring sagas. This is a style of writing which is unencumbered by the realities of the world around us. A writer can take any number of liberties with the world around us, and create with truly no constraints.
While we all probably read some books outside our favorite genres, I usually read urban fantasy, space opera, crime thrillers and graphic novels - all some form of escapist literature!

"What do you consider more important: plot or character?"

For the most part, I would take character any given day. I've felt that most of the experience of reading depends on the experience you have in your head while you are reading a book. I'm more able to enjoy the story if I relate to or like the character. Otherwise, the story becomes secondary to the voice in my head which is grumbling about what I dislike in the book's hero/heroine.

That usually does not end well.

There are some exceptions of course - Epic novels like Lord of the Rings, books with vast plot structures like The Malazan books of the Fallen, these are so plot-driven that it is almost irrelevant if you enjoy the character narrative. These authors have also created strong evil characters, multi-dimensional heroines, brave souls - and the storyline lives up to the promise.

What do you think? Is it an either/or situation? Could it be a good character makes a sketchy plot come to life, but a poor plot can sink anyone?

"What is your favorite book cover?"
A fav book cover? Can I say that this question stumped me a little?

A whole bunch of books I read are ebooks, and the cover doesn't get too much attention from me, I'm sorry to say. I do appreciate the posts bloggers I follow make on cover art, and fan covers!!
So after thinking for a LOONG time (3 minutes), I've come up with an old childhood friend of a cover -> The Dairy of Anne Frank, and this edition here is one I got from my grandmother! I'm sure there are newer covers, but I love this one. I remember spending time gazing at her face, and those expressive eyes, each time I read the book.

"Let's use this week's Hop to share what we are most thankful for and what our holiday traditions are!"

I'm Indian, and we have a HOST of holidays every year, depending on the flavor of your religion/credo. My family celebrates 'Ganesh Chaturthi' every year, honoring Ganesha, the fun-loving God of Wisdom, Luck and several other qualities. We have special food that we make on this day - rice cakes, sweet rice balls, sticky jaggery kadubus, coconut milk - it is Yum! Traditionally, Ganesha's idol is lowered into water at the end of the festival, but we choose to not pollute the water bodies. For us, it really is all about the food.

I am super thankful for a loving family, and for living in Bangalore, my favorite city!

I do get worried when I see the count of followers go down, and I'm still not sure what I could be doing wrong. I think the next contest I have, I probably shall not make it exclusively for followers - hopefully only folks that are interested in my blog follow.
There are several blogs I enjoy reading and commenting on. These bloggers are friends on Goodreads and on Twitter as well. With that level of interaction, I am never going to stop following! Remember, follow me, leave a note here, and I will follow back.

"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"
Any book I read gets completed :) It is a pretty compulsive reading habit, and 99/100 times, I have to finish, no matter how bad the book might be. The only times I remain unable to complete the book, rare as this may be, is when it is a boring non-fiction book. In this case, I'd probably 'temporarily' shelve it for a while.

The few months I've been blogging have really been a discovery into the world of blogging! I joined Book Blogs and eventually Goodreads, for example. I used to Tweet about whatever interested me, and I began using that to announce when I had a new post out. More than anything, it helps to be seen commenting on other blogger's posts. I also got my husband to put it on his facebook page :D, but can still up my facebook publicity via my page too.
I noticed that some blogs have comment boxes that show your latest post by default - what a great idea! What do you think about adding your blog/website to your email signature? I'm thinking of doing that! Is it too presumptous? Ideas?
Earlier this week - I launched a contest with an International Giveaway!!, Celebrated Banned Books Week and had a Guest Post at I just wanna sit here and Read.
